Description
Jabi doryang chambeop (Repentance Ritual of the Great Compassion) was used for a Buddhist ceremony wherein people read Buddhist scriptures to repent of their sins. This ceremony is believed to enable people to be blessed and to be freed from pains. As mistakes and distortions appeared over time, this book was thoroughly cross-checked and proofread to be published in ten volumes. Volume 10, the last volume of the book, was printed on mulberry paper using woodblocks, measuring 14 cm wide and 34 cm long when folded. On the first page, it has a frontispiece illustration depicting the seven past Buddhas and Maitreya Buddha, with a record at the end stating that this book was originally owned by Sindam in 1506 (first year of the reign of King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty) before being passed to Seongjang. Even though the exact year of publication is not known due to the lack of records, the woodblocks are assumed to have been engraved during the Goryeo Dynasty based on the fact that the last strokes are missing in the posthumous designations of King Taejo, King Jeongjong, and King Mokjong. Regarding the printing quality, this book is presumed to have been printed during the Joseon Period using woodblocks made in the Goryeo Period.
