Description
This rock-carved Buddha is located on the northern foot of Jonjesan Mountain, which surrounds almost the entire area of Yureo-myeon, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do. This area is said to have been occupied once by a Buddhist temple called Jonjesa, which was built during the Goryeo Period, but no relics have been discovered around this area except for some tile fragments. There is a topknot-like usnisa (protrusion on the top of Buddha’s head) in the middle of the bald head, but the nose and mouth parts of the round, peaceful face are damaged. The round and strong shoulders make this statue look stable and merciful, and the sacerdotal robe draped over both shoulders also covers knees. What draws one’s attention is that the shoulder is extraordinarily expressed, as if a separate shawl were worn. Two hands are held together on the chest with the thumb and forefinger forming a circle, which is characteristic of the preaching Buddha. The head mandorla is separated from the body mandorla by two lines, and a bead-like shape is carved within the line. Outside of the head and body mandorlas is a flame pattern carved in an animated way. Lotus leaves facing downward are carved on the bottom of the pedestal, and pillar and bead designs and upturned lotus leaves, on the middle and upper parts, respectively. This is regarded as an excellent example of a relief statue made in the early Goryeo Period.
