Description

These artifacts were discovered inside the platform of the three-tiered stone pagoda while it was being disassembled for repairs in 1995. The relics included twenty gilt-bronze Buddha statues dating from the Unified Silla to the Goryeo Period, various offerings, a stele) (dated 1491) containing information on the repair of the pagoda. Although some of the Buddha statues were damaged, the discovery of valuable relics from different historical periods in one place is very significant. There have been many other cases in which Buddha statues, rather than sarira reliquaries, have been discovered enshrined within a Unified Silla stone pagoda, but it is extremely rare to find so many from such different periods and with such diverse patterns and forms inside one stone pagoda. This unusual discovery also indicates that the stone pagoda, which was built in the ninth century, has been repaired on many occasions. The items recovered from the three-tiered stone pagoda of Pyochungsa Temple are regarded as an important resource for scholars interested in gilt-bronze Buddha images, offerings enshrined in stone pagodas, and the repair works carried out on stone pagodas.
