Description
These ink wash paintings produced in 1747 by Jeong Seon (1676-1759) for the Album of the Divinity of Sea Rocks (Haeak Jeonsincheop) are regarded as some of the greatest ever masterpieces depicting Geumgangsan Mountain. Created when Jeong was seventy-two years old, the works exhibit the fully mature brushstrokes of the master artist, and are characterized by the masterful use of a variety of brush techniques and fine gradations of bluish green to express the scenic details. The album consists of thirty-eight sheets, of which twenty-one contain the actual paintings while the rest contain the title of the album, an introduction, various poetic works, and a postscript. The value of this cultural heritage is further enhanced by the inclusion of poetic works by two renowned men of letters of the mid-Joseon period, Kim Chang-heup (1653-1722) and Yi Byeong-yeon (1671-1751), and notes containing information on the background to(the production of the album.
