Description
The Album of Famous Scenic Attractions in the Capital Region (Gyeonggyo Myeongseungcheop) by Jeong Seon (1676-1759) is a collection of real view (Jingyeong) landscapes paintings of renowned scenic sites situated around the capital of Joseon and the Han River. The paintings are thought to have been produced between 1741 and 1759, the year of Jeong’s death. The paintings in the album exhibit the characteristic elements of Jeong Seon’s style. Among them, the landscapes along the Han River have been praised for the serene atmosphere created by the use of colors – particularly green and yellow-green. Jeong’s use of blue-green color wash painting techniques (Cheongnok Damchaebeop) extended the horizon of his art. The album is highly regarded for the academic and artistic merits of the paintings and the accompanying record on the background to the paintings, including their production dates. It is also considered a valuable historical material due to its realistic depiction of the landscapes around the Han River, which are now gravely disrupted.
