Description
This landscape painting, A Thatch-roofed Pavilion on Mount Lushan (Yeosan Chodangdo), by Jeong Seon (1676-1759) has been widely acclaimed as a work in which characteristic elements of landscape painting are combined with those of figure painting to portray a famous historical event that occurred in China. Mount Lushan is a very famous travel destination that attracted numerous Chinese artists and men of letters in the past; and it has been painted many times by Chinese and Korean artists. In this painting, Jeong Seon depicts the famous Tang poet Bai Juyi (772–846), how lived a secluded life in a thatched-roof hut in the depths of Mount Lushan. While the painting is based on the style of painting of the Southern School of China, the artist combines it with the brush techniques he himself developed for his Jingyeong landscape paintings. The use of multiple colors makes it a rare, uniquely representative example of both Jeong’s art and the landscape paintings of the late Joseon period.
