Description
This certificate was issued to Jo Seo-gyeong in the fourth lunar month of 1435 (17th year of the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty) to certify that he passed the military examination. A son of Jo Ha and the older brother of Jo Seo-jeong, Jo Seo-gyeong served as a military official during the reigns of King Sejong and King Sejo. This one-page certificate contains 6 lines written in cursive script and measures 70 cm wide and 76.6 cm long. It also carries a royal seal measuring 10 by 10 centimeters. It provides valuable information on the state examination conducted in the early Joseon Period as well as the use of royal seals.
