Description

The Celadon Bottle with Incised Ring Design was made in twelfth-century Goryeo by copying an ancient metal vessel used for ritual purposes. The final product was completed by joining the separately made mouth with the neck, body, and base. Its gently curved neck, protruded ring connecting the neck and body, pair of loop handles attached to the opposite sides of the shoulder, short foot with everted base, and pair of rings incised around the lower end of each handle show that this celadon work is a faithful reproduction of the original. The vessel is also distinguished by the elaborate rendering of the fine details, the attractive glaze color, and its good condition. Considering the extreme rarity of this artifact, it seems highly likely that vessels of this kind were produced only for a small number of people belonging to the ruling class of Goryeo. The shape of the vessel, along with its serene glaze color, firing technique and other features, suggests that it was produced at a kiln in Gangjin in the twelfth century. The fact that this bottle is a ceramic reproduction of an original metal ritual vessel displaying the characteristic elements of early Goryeo celadon gives it a significant place in the history of Korean ceramic art.
