Description

The Assembly on Vulture Peak” (Yeongsan Hoesangdo) of Yongcheonsa Temple in Cheongdo is a large altar painting produced in 1749. It was stolen on May 30, 2000 and recovered in August 2014. There is no record of the artist who produced the four-meter-high painting, but certain features - such as its composition, the calm and benign look of the Buddha and the bodhisattvas, the elaborate tiny ornamental designs decorating the dharma robes, and the use of red and green in low intensity - show close similarities with the style of Im Han, who was active during the mid-seventeenth century and produced altar paintings for the temples of Girimsa, Tongdosa and Seongnamsa and other Buddhist temples in the province of Gyeongsang-do. The painting, which depicts Shakyamuni Buddha and numerous followers gathered for his sermon on Vulture Peak, has been widely praised for its detailed composition and refined brushstrokes.
