Description
Buddhist Painting of Bomunsa Temple in Yecheon (Three Bodhisattvas) was produced in 1767. The painting was stolen from Bomunsa Temple on June 5, 1989 and recovered in August 2014. The elaborate depiction of the divinities and the harmonious use of colors make it a fine example of this type of Buddhist altar painting. While the painting depicts the rulers of the three different realms, the main focus is on the Ksitigarbhah bodhisattva and the worship of the underworld that he rules. The painting is divided into three parts, one in the upper section and two in the lower section, to render the three themes of trial by the underworld judges, punishment in hell, and salvation from hell. It is the only known painting of the triple-realm bodhisattvas to depict the worship of the Buddhist underworld ruled by Ksitigarbhah.
