Description

Monk Mengshan Deyi’s Sermon on Six Paths Buddhism was written by Monk Mengshan Deyi (1231-1308) during the Yuan Dynasty of China in an attempt to explain the Six Ways of Reincarnation. The complete set of six plates of the woodblock used to print the book was re-engraved at Gaesimsa Temple in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, where it is still kept, in 1584 (the 17th year of the reign of King Seonjo). Numerous editions of the book were published in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and there are more than twenty woodblock-printed editions, and about twenty editions still exist today, the most remaining edition of which is the Hyeonambon (1497) edition made at Yongchulsa Temple in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do, each line of which is composed of 13 characters in a printed style of handwriting. The edition kept at Gaesimsa Temple is thought to have been re-engraved based on the copies kept at Ilwolsa Temple (1432), Jabiryeongsa Temple (1490), and Daegwangsa Temple (1509), each line of which is composed of fifteen characters in a cursive style. As the most complete set of woodblocks made for the book before the Imjin War, it is a highly valuable artifact.
