Description

Ksitigarbha pranidhana Sutra tells of how Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva made great vows to rescue sentient beings. Originally translated by Fadeng of the Tang Dynasty, this sutra was published by Princess Jeongui, second daughter of King Sejong, to pray for the soul of her deceased husband, An Maeng-dam, in 1469 (first year of the reign of King Yejong of the Joseon Dynasty). Three volumes were bound into one book, which measures 20.5 cm wide and 31.8 cm long. The book was printed on mulberry paper using woodblocks. On the first page are a frontispiece illustration summarizing the contents of this sutra, an invocation, and a painting of guardian deities. A record about the sutra’s publication can be found at the end of this book and was written by Kim Su-on. Gwon Don-il, Sa Bu-gwi, and Go Mal-jong participated in the engraving of the woodblocks. With the magnificent skill evident in the illustrations and the carved characters, this book is regarded as a valuable material that shows the typical Buddhist faith of the royal palace in the Joseon Dynasty.
