Description
The Printing Woodblocks for Odae jineon were made at Gangdangsa Temple in Gayasan, Chungcheong in 1604 (the 37th year of the reign of King Seonjo). Hosanrok, a town journal of Seosan-gun written by HAN Yeohyeon in 1619, states that Bowonsa Temple was also known as Gangdangsa Temple. A Collection of the Five Great Mantras, which was first published in 1485 (the 16th year of the reign of King Seongjong), lists the following five dharani in Sanskrit characters, followed by their transcription into Chinese characters and Hangeul: 42-Hand Mantras, Great Compassionate Dharani, Dharani Parati-sara sutra, Mahapratyavgira-dharani, and Usnisa Vijaya Dharani. It is regarded as a valuable material for scholars who are interested in Sanskrit characters and their transliteration into Hangeul. The woodblocks [a complete set of nine plates (28 chapters)] kept at Gaesimsa Temple are engraving of the Dharani Parati-sara Sutra, one of the Five Great Mantras. It is highly valuable because it is the oldest complete set of woodblocks about the Five Great Mantras.
