Description

Gosa Inmuldo(Noble Hermits) by Kim Hong-do is a collection of paintings by Kim Hong-do (1745-after 1806) depicting a group of widely admired hermits including Zhu Xi (1130-1200), Emperor Guangwu (5 BC- 57), Wang Xizhi (303–361) and Tao Yuanming (365–427). The paintings, which are in good condition, are believed to have been mounted on a folding screen. While the subjects were taken from famous episodes from Chinese history, the details of the human figures and the surrounding natural environment reflect the artistic sensibility of a Korean master. The paintings are regarded as the best Korean representations of the Chinese hermits and Confucian thinkers who were widely admired by Joseon’s Confucian elite. The paintings are masterpieces which Kim Hong-do created by exploiting all the techniques he matured during the last phase of his life as an artist.
