Description
The Shurangama Sutra (Sutra of the Heroic One) is one of the texts that all Buddhist monks are required to study. The sutra emphasizes the importance of going beyond intellectually understanding Buddha’s teachings to assimilate them such that the seeker of enlightenment can draw strength from them. Shurangama Sutra was annotated by Jiehuan of the Song Dynasty; its publishing in Hangeul was ordered by King Sejong in 1449 (31st year of King Sejong’s reign) and completed in 1461 (7th year of King Sejo’s reign). Three volumes were bound into one book, which measures 25 cm wide and 36.9 cm long. Large Chinese characters with Hangeul letters suffixed were added to aid in the reading of Chinese texts, and two lines of translation were printed in the book. Eulhae types, which used rather wide and low letters based on a style of handwriting by Kang Hui-an, was chosen as calligraphic style. The text bore a mark of correction with a vermilion color. It is regarded as a valuable material in the study of printing style as well as for its rarity and great influence on the translation and organization of Gangyeong Dogam (Directorate of Buddhist Publications).
