Description
Miindo(A Beautiful Woman) is a full-length portrait of a beautiful woman produced by Sin Yun-bok (ca. 1758-after 1813), who, along with Kim Hong-do, is regarded as one of the two greatest painters of genre art in late Joseon. Kim used delicate brushstrokes and attractively subdued colors to depict his subject wearing a large wig (gache), a color-trimmed jacket and voluminous skirt, a violet hair ribbon, a vermillion waist string, and pink norigae ornaments, lending vivacity to the painting and creating a delightful contrast with the woman’s static posture. The painting occupies a prominent position in the history of Korean art history as only a few full-length portraits of women were produced before Sin Yun-bok. It is now widely regarded as a sublime example of a portrait of a woman of nineteenth-century Joseon.
