Description

The placenta chamber of the thirteenth king of Joseon (King Myeongjong) and the accompanying monument were erected in Seosan in 1538 (the 33rd year of the reign of King Jungjong) according to the royal protocol. Many of the chambers built for other members of the royal family of Joseon were either relocated or reformed after their initial installation, but this one, together with its nearby surroundings, has been preserved in good condition at its original location. As there is a detailed record of the chamber and monument in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the placenta chamber and monument of King Myeonjong are regarded as a valuable cultural heritage, particularly as they shed light on changes in the culture of building placenta chambers, the rite known as gabong taesil(King placenta chamber), in which stone monuments were rearranged around the chamber upon its owner’s accession to the throne, and gabonggaesutaesil(Renovated placenta chamber) . All in all, it is a valuable site for research on royal rites related to the placenta chambers of the Joseon dynasty.
