Description
As the most fundamental text for Korean Huayan Buddhism, Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra) has had seminal influence on Korean Buddhist philosophy along with the Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra). The central idea expressed in this sutra is the unity of Buddha and sentient beings. This is Volume 29 of the 80 volumes of the Zhou Version translated by Siksananda (Shichanantuo, or Silchananta in Korean) of the Tang Dynasty and was transcribed in gold on white paper. Folded like a folding screen, this book measures 41.2 cm long and 14.7 cm wide. The dark blue cover contains the title and a splendid flower decoration, with a frontispiece illustration on the first page. Although there is no record on the procession of sutra transcription, its style is similar to the Transcription of Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) in Ink on White Paper, designated as Treasure No. 278. Printing is assumed to have been done in the early 15th century, judging from its calligraphic style.
