Description

This work of calligraphy, titled Chimgye (“Ash Stream”), by Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856) features two Chinese characters (梣溪) in clerical script written horizontally on “powdered Tang paper” (bundangji) and mounted on a silk scroll. On the left of the space is a postscript composed of eighty-six characters in regular script arranged in eight lines, concluded with two white-in square seals. Chimgye was the pen-name of Yun Jeong-hyeon, a friend of Kim Jeong-hui. According to the postscript, Yun asked his friend to produce a calligraphic work with his pen-name. However, Kim Jeong-hui was unable to comply with his friend’s request for about thirty years because he could not find the character ‘chim’ (梣) among the collection of clerical scripts of Han China. Finally, he created his own script by combining regular script with clerical script in order to fulfill his friend’s request, resulting in this masterpiece. With its free-spirited combination of two different scripts, this work is generally regarded as a great work of art representing the atypical style developed by Kim Jeong-hui. Chimgye is widely praised not only for the perfection of its composition and brushing technique but also for the style, which reflects Kim Jeong-hui’s academic and artistic achievements and noble character.
