Description

Geungnakbojeon Hall of Sinheungsa Temple is a 3 kan* by 3 kan structure with a hip-and-gable roof and heavily bracketed eaves. It served as a temple where prayers were offered for the repose of deceased members of the royal family in Yeongdong Province. It exhibits significant differences from its counterparts in terms of its overall structure and form– particularly its exterior designs, bracket system, platform, stairs, and doors and windows. Notably, the ornamental peony and lion motifs engraved on the base platform and the Sam-Taegeuk forms and dragon heads on the balusters of the stairs are rarely seen in other temple buildings. The hall has been preserved in good condition, although it appears to have been repaired in the mid-eighteenth century, and is worthy of designation as a national cultural heritage (Treasure) in recognition of its historical, architectural, and artistic value.
