Description
Seowon gyopil gyeolhu is a piece of handwriting penned in the cursive style by Kim Jeonghui (Pen-name: Chusa/1786-1856) that presents various criticisms of the statements in the preface of a book on calligraphy theory by Yi Gwangsa (1705-1777). Kim Jeonghui’s emphasis on the need for archaeological verification of the inscriptions engraved on stones or other durable materials when practicing one’s handwriting makes it a useful material for scholars who are interested in the country’s calligraphic theories. This piece is noteworthy as a key content of Kim’s theory on handwriting. The cursive style of his handwriting attests to his class as a representative calligrapher of Korea toward the end of the Joseon period. The book’s three ink-wash paintings are considered to be supreme examples of the literati paintings he loved to paint.
