Description
Paintings of Three Clear Beings by Yi Jeong is a collection of paintings and calligraphic works produced by Yi Jeong (brush name: Taneun, 1554-1626), a minor member of the royal family of Joseon (1392-1910), on the twelfth day of the twelfth month of 1594 while he was staying in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do. The album consists of fifty-four pages. Yi Jeong is widely regarded as one of the greatest names working in the genre of ink wash bamboo paintings during the Joseon period. The paintings collected in this album, however, include maehwa (i.e. East Asian apricot) and orchid as well as bamboo paintings, introducing viewers to a wider picture of Yi’s art. The paintings were created by applying gold to indigo silk, resulting in the elaborate depiction of details related with the ecological features of the Four Noble Beings (Sagunja). The album also includes postscripts written by a few of the artist’s contemporaries and intellectuals of later generations, such as Choe Rip (1539-1612), Cha Cheon-ro (1556-1615), Yun Sin-ji (1582-1657) and Song Si-yeol (1607-1689), which provide detailed information on the album, including its production date and how it was preserved for future viewers. The album is generally regarded both as a crucial resource for the study of Sagunja paintings of the Joseon period and as a fine example of the masterful brush techniques of Yi Jeong, a master of ink wash painting.
