Description

Landscapes and Flower-and-Bird Paintings by Yi Jing is a collection of eighteen paintings produced by Yi Jing (pen-name: Heoju, 1581-?), who was famous for his small landscapes (sogyeong), flowers and birds (hwajo), and animals (yeongmo), and thirty-seven pieces of poetry written by Yi Sik (pen-name: Taekdang, 1584-1647) and Yi Myeong-han (pen-name: Baekju, 1595-1645) and other men of letters of his time. The preface to the album shows that it was published in 1652 when Yi Jing was 62 years old. It was in this period that Yi Jing reached the zenith of his career as an artist and was appointed by King Injo (r. 1623-1649) to serve as a supervisor for the court painters working at the Office of Charts and Paintings (Dohwaseo). The works by Yi Jing collected for this album show that he played a pioneering role in the development of Korean painting in the seventeenth century, not just in the genres of flower-and-bird and animal paintings but in landscape painting too, and these pieces are the standars to understand his art. The paintings in this album are highly regarded partly because the identity of the artist and the production dates are clearly known, whereas very little is known about the production dates or the artists who produced the remaining landscape and flower-and-bird paintings of the mid-Joseon period. The album, known to be the oldest extant collection of poetry, calligraphy and painting bound into book form, is highly regarded as a valuable source of information on Korean art history.
