Description
Genre Paintings by Kim Deuk-sin is a collection of eight paintings produced by Kim Deuk-sin (pen-name: Geungjae, 1754-1822), a court painter of late Joseon. Kim Deuk-sin was born into a family of professional artists based in Gaeseong, including his uncle Kim Eung-hwan, his brother Kim Seok-sin and his son Kim Ha-jong. His work showed the influence of Kim Hong-do, and excelled at landscape and genre paintings in particular. The eight paintings collected for this small album are regarded as representative works of Kim Deuk-sin’s artistic achievement, each displaying distinguished artistic merits. In the paintings, the artist was able to express the emotional state of the subjects through the elaborate depiction of their movements in each given situation. The use of an intentionally simple background to focus the viewer’s attention on the figures and their activities, and the selective use of shading techniques and diverse brushstrokes make the paintings uniquely different from the genre paintings of Kim Hong-do.
