Description

This Buddha statue stands on a round pedestal and measures 2.65 m tall. Enshrined in Yonghwajeon Hall of Daeyulsa Temple, it displays sophisticated features such as the low and wide usnisa (protrusion on the top of Buddha’s head) on the bald head, round face, small eyes and mouth, and long ears drooping to the shoulders. The short but majestic neck is carved with three distinct lines. The right hand faces outward to make the gesture of granting people’s wish, but the left hand is put on the chest with the palm facing the body. The robe draped over both shoulders forms a U shape from the chest to the belly and knees. The pleats on the wrist are dignified together with the long bottom of the body, but it has a somewhat stiff impression. Nonetheless, it expresses well the characteristics of the polished and majestic Buddha statues made in the Silla Period.
