Description

Chapter on the Bodhisattva Precepts in the Brahma Net Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper is a copy of a set of basic Buddhist precepts from which originated The Ceremony for the Ordination of the Bodhisattva Precepts and The Dharma Gathering for Ordination”. While it lacks a colophon, the transcription of the text on both sides of the paper and the postscript written by Daeyeon, the monk who played the leading role in the transcription, and attached at the end of the copy provide clear clues to its production date. The comparatively small in size, the frontispiece of the transcription contains an elaborate illustration of the Buddha giving a sermon to his followers and other Buddhist divinities, whose gold pigment has retained its original luster. Transcriptions of Buddhist scriptures dating back to Goryeo and complete with a frontispiece are now extremely rare. These transcriptions of the Dharma Net Sutra are particularly so, and therefore are regarded as a valuable part of the Korean cultural heritage, as shown by the Chapter on the Bodhisattva Precepts in the Brahma Net Sutra in Gold on White Paper (1364, Treasure No. 1714).
