Description

Jeokmyeolbogung Hall is a temple building with a rare and unique structure quite unlike that of any other building in Korea. It measures 3 kan* (façade) by 2 kan (sides), and is heavily bracketed, including birdwing-shaped brackets that support the eaves of the roof, a characteristic feature of nineteenth-century structures. However, its interior exhibits considerably older construction techniques (particularly the technique used to produce the rafters and the configuration of the wooden trusses) similar to those used in the early to mid-Joseon period. Notable examples of this style include Bogwangjeon, or the Hall of Universal Light, of Simwonsa Temple (1374; North Korea); the Main Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple (National Treasure No. 311; renovated in 1435), and Sungryemun Gate (National Treasure No.1; renovated in 1448). In light of all these features, the hall is a very valuable heritage in terms of the history and styles of Korean architecture.
