Description

The Wooden Seated Shakyamuni Triad of Ssanggyesa Temple in Jindo is a group of three statues of Shakyamuni and his two attendants, carved in 1665 by a group of monk-sculptors led by Huijang and Dou. Of the three, Huijang was active in Jeolla-do province until the mid-1660s, and is regarded as one of the greatest Buddhist sculptors of his time. Preserved in their original condition, the statues of Shakyamuni and his acolytes are characterized by heads that are more prominent than bodies, knees raised higher and wider, and folds in robes that are cut shallower and rendered in a simpler manner, exhibiting the changes that occurred in the art of Huijang. The statues are also famous for the relics discovered in the hidden repository inside the statues, including a tubular container (huryeongtong) filled with special offerings to Buddha, which shed light on the practice of enshrining votive offerings inside Buddhist statues in the mid to late seventeenth century. As the background to this Shakyamuni triad - including its production date, the identities of the artists who carved it, and the place where it was originally enshrined – are known, it is regarded as an important resource for research on Korean Buddhist sculpture of the seventeenth century.
