Description
About 30 round and gourd-shaped tombs are scattered throughout Geumcheok-ri, the suburbs of Gyeongju. The tombs here are presumably those for low-level nobles of the Silla Period (57 B.C. ~ A.D.668). The exact dates of their construction are not known. Note, however, that their location and the interior structure of some of them -- as revealed during the road construction in 1952 -- indicate that they are in the style of wood-lined chamber tombs of the Old Silla Period (57 B.C. ~ A.D. 668). Legend has it that the tombs were built by the first king of Silla, Bak Hyeokgeose, in the first century B.C. The King, according to the legend, received a wonderful golden ruler with mysterious power from the Heavens. When the Chinese emperor heard about it and demanded the golden ruler as a present, the Korean king ordered the 40 mounds built in haste and hid the ruler in one of them. The village name, Geumcheok-ri (Golden Ruler Village), is said to be derived from this legend.
