Description
Built during the Baekje Period with white stones encircling the summit of a hill, this fortress earned its name "Fortress of Steamer Dough" since it looked like white dough used to fill the gaps around the traditional rice cake steamer. It was believed to have been built to protect the capital when it was moved to Sabi in the 16th year of the reign of King Seong. With 2-3m high walls having circumference of 600m, this fortress is practically destroyed, but its south part is relatively well-preserved. Sites where the gates stood can be seen from the southern, northern, and western parts of the wall. The structure of the wall looks awkward compared with other fortress walls, although it was constructed considering the topography. Shards of Baekje earthenware and tiles are still scattered in the fortress. There is also a site of a well on the eastern part. This fortress faces the double fortress in Eunsan-myeon and Ongnyeobongsanseong Fortress to the west. Based on the record that King Munmu attacked Goseongseong Fortress and won the battle in the 12th year of his reign (672), this fortress is also presumed to be Goseongseong Fortress. It is believed to have been the strategic base during the reconstruction campaign of Baekje.
