Description

Located in a place that offers the best view of Daewangam, the submerged tomb of King Munmu, this building was constructed during the reign of King Sinmun, the 31st king of Silla, to commemorate the will of King Munmu to defend his state even after his death in 682. Built near the shore of the East Sea by King Sinmun, Gameunsa Temple has a waterway under its main hall, connecting the sea and the temple and enabling the soul of his dead father, King Munmu, to visit the temple. According to records, this place was named Igyeondae because dragons -- from which King Sinmun received a jade belt and a pipe named Manpasikjeok, which could save the world and make it peaceful -- had appeared here. Meaning Silla benefitted after King Sinmun saw the dragons, its name Igyeondae was picked from the phrase in Juyeok, one of the three Chinese "holy books.” When the site of the building was unearthed during the excavation works, this building was rebuilt based on the inferred construction style of the Silla Period.
