Description
This is the royal tomb named Heonneung where King Taejong, the third king of Joseon, and Queen Wongyeong, his wife, are buried. As the fifth son of King Taejo, the founding father of Joseon, he helped his father establish Joseon in 1392. He crushed two instances of upheaval among the princes and ascended to the throne in the second year of the reign of King Jeongjong in 1400. He carried out reform at the comprehensive level from the land and tax systems to the military and religion systems and stabilized the people's life. His wife, Wongyeong, was from a highly respected vassal, contributing considerably to her husband’s ascension to the throne. The couple tombs were constructed after the tomb of King Taejo, and the bottom is surrounded with stone screen. The tombs of the royal couple are connected to each other through the surrounding twelve-sided stone balustrade and installed with the stone circle, the front stone, and other statutes such as civil officer or horse in front of them. These tombs have one more stone figure in front compared to other royal tombs. Below the hill are a t-shaped building and a pavilion for monument. In the second year of the reign of the Great King Sejong, this place was selected as the site of royal tombs with the death of Queen Wongyeong. These tombs were ordered to stand abreast to reflect the Confucian doctrines.
