Description
This is the site of a place where ceramic wares, vessels, and roof tiles were formed and fired. On September, 1977 several kiln sites where roof tiles were fired, and 9 pieces of ceramic ware were found by an archaeological team from the Gyeongju National Museum when they were digging here. After investigation at one excavated kiln site on a hill slope, it was found to have been a cave type kiln built with a total length of 10.5 meters and a width of 1.72 meters. Part of a wall near the ceiling of the firing kiln still remains, and a high wall divides the forming room and the firing room. Of the total fragments of roof tile, one with an impressed bird feather design which had been prevalent at the time of the Goryeo Dynasty, one decorated with a lotus design, and those made during the Joseon Dynasty account for the major portion. In particular, a concave roof-end tile with ‘Qianlong’ carved on the bottom was excavated from the bottom of the kiln. Since ‘Qianlong’ refers to the ruling years of certain emperors in Chinise Dynasties and Goryeo and Joseon also sometimes adopted it, the tile hints that this one had been fired just before the kiln was closed, and that this kiln was built in the period between the Goryeo Dynasty and the middle of the Joseon Dynasty.
