Description

This was built as the Japanese consulate in the 4th year of the reign of Gwangmu (1900). Its construction was commenced on January 1900 and completed in December the same year. It was used as the Japanese consulate until 1907. Later, from 1914, the building was used as the 2nd authority building of Mokpo-bu, then from 1974 as the Mokpo City Library, and it has been used as the Mokpo Culture Center since 1990. Located on the side of Yudalsan Mountain, 1 km from the sea, this is a 2-story western Renaissance-style building. It has a square plan and an outstanding porch at the center. It once had wooden floors, but now has artificial stone floors. Most of the ceiling was painted directly on the cement surface, but the ceiling in the reading room was decorated with wood. Every room has its own fireplace made of marble, and the original mirrors still remain in their original state. This building is in keeping with the western building pattern of modern times, and is one of the positive remnants of Japanese rule which can remind us of the lessons of our history.
