Description
As the kiln site where ceramics were baked, Doyoji is located in the neighborhood of Gwangju-eup including Namjong-myeon, Toechon-myeon, etc. The soil for making ceramics is obtained here, together with sufficient water and wood. It is near Seoul, a supplying area of product and which is convenient for delivery thanks to Hangang River, leading to the designation of this place as the Branch of Royal Cuisine Office in charge of palace foods in 1752, the 28th year of the reign of King Yeongjo. A total of 285 kiln sites had flourished around a stretch of this area for about 130 years until the dynasty fell. When the national situation became difficult at the end of Joseon, the operation of the Bunwon-ri kiln site was transferred to a private entity. Later, the shape and pattern became diverse according to the supply and demand of many classes, developing as the central area of blue and white porcelain pieces. A review of the investigated kiln site revealed that the kiln is of the inclined type, with the workplace and tiered kilns discovered. Ceramics with various shapes and patterns carved were excavated, with the letter-inlaid ceramics enabling a comparative determination of the corresponding time. Since the areas were a center of production of high-quality ceramics from the early to the end of the Joseon period, they are of great value as the foundation of research on the ceramics history of Joseon and are important remains to be preserved.
