Description

It is the memorial building commemorating the fact that Father Kim Dae-geon arrived at Hwangsan Ferry after he became a priest in China in 1845. Father Vermorel designed and supervised the work, and Chinese engineers built it in 1906. It was made of wood, consisting of 5 rooms in front and 13 on the side; the reconstruction in 1916 had part of the building changed into bricks, with repair done twice. It is similar to a two-story building, and the roof is octagonal when viewed from the side, similar to a counter-wedge shape. The ceiling was placed with a board, and planks were used as flooring. Noteworthy is the fact that it was built by harmonizing Korean traditional and western styles with the introduction of Catholicism. There are memorial monuments for Fathers Vermorel and Kim Dae-geon, and it is a very famous place housing Catholic remains in the Jeolla-do area.
