Description

The Gyejoksanseong Fortress, wherein the fortress wall was built in a circular fashion to defend the top of a mountain, was situated on top of Gyejoksan Mountain (420 meters above sea level) in Jang-dong, Daejeon, Korea. The wall is about 7∼10m tall, with its gates facing the directions of south, east, and west. In the fortress, a large well site was excavated, showing how wells were built during the Three Kingdoms Period. In addition, tiles made in the Goryeo Dynasty and pots in the Joseon Dynasty were unearthed at some sites of a building inside the fortress, suggesting that armies and people stayed there until the Joseon Dynasty. Many historians thought the Baekje Dynasty constructed it, but other historians discovered that the actual constructors were the people of the Silla Dynasty, based on the excavation performed during the years 1998 and 1999. The construction of this fortress is very similar to that of Samnyeonsanseong Fortress by the Silla Dynasty. It proves that the oldest earthenware excavated from the fortress was made during the Silla Dynasty in the mid- or late 6th Century. Excavation of some earthenware was also made later by people of the Baekje Dynasty, but most of it was made by people of the Silla Dynasty. Therefore, some historians believe that the Baekje Dynasty occupied the fortress, but that the people of the Silla Dynasty actually constructed it. Nonetheless, the argument over the actual constructor of the fortress continues. What is true is that the Silla or the Baekje Dynasty constructed it in the mid- or late 6th century, suggesting that the Daejeon area was geographically important at that time.
