Description
This is an ancient fortress built on Gungsan Mountain, Yangcheon-hyeon during the Joseon Dynasty. The northern wall of the fortress has a steeply slanting grade toward Hangang River, but the southern wall is gently graded. It surrounds the peak area, with reported total length of about 220 meters and area of 29,370 square meters (8,900 pyeong). Detailed information on the fortress site can be found in historical books such as Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (New Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), Yeojidoseo (Detailed Survey of Korean Geography), and Daedongjiji (Geography of the Great East). The Jeoksimseok (core stone) was used for building the fortress wall by inserting a core on the inner side, and wall stones were found as traces of the old fortress. General Gwon Yul is said to have stayed here once before winning the battle of Haengjusanseong Fortress across the river. It is one of the most remarkable military defense facilities together with Haengjusanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 56) and Odusanseong Fortress, Paju (Historic Site No. 351), which were essential defense spots for the entrance of Hangang River.
