These are the ruins of a Buddhist temple during the Silla Dynasty in Bomun-dong, Gyeongju-si. They are located on the front field of Bomun-dong, far east of Nangsan Mountain (Historic Site ) of Gyeongju, and south of Myeonghwalsanseong Fortress (Historic Site). When the Buddhist temple was built is not known, but is estimated to have been built before 871, the 11th year of the reign of King Gyeongmun of the Silla Dynasty. Most of the temple site is now widely used as a rice paddy. Note, however, that many stone materials excavated here suggest that there were many buildings located here during the Silla Dynasty. This temple site was believed to be the place where Bomunsa Temple used to stand due to the fact that a tile engraved with “Bomunsa Temple” was found during the Japanese Occupation. Some stone appendages of a pagoda have been preserved at the site, such as Flagpole Supports (Treasure) and Stone Basin (Treasure).
