Description
Located near Cheoneunsa Temple on Dutasan Mountain, a branch of the Taebaeksan Mountain Range, this site is a meaningful place where Goryeo scholar and politician Yi Seung-hyu (penname Dongangeosa) wrote the book Jewangungi (Songs of Emperors and Kings) in 1287 (13th year of the reign of King Chungnyeol). The book is a history of the Korean people and an epic poem at the same time. On this site, Yi Seung-hyu built a house called Yongandang where he lived while writing Jewangungi. Below the house was a well called Pyoeumjeong, and above this was a pavilion called Bogwangjeong. Around the pavilion, Yi planted pine trees, bamboo, and flowers; below it, he made a pond called Jirakdang. These facts are recorded in the “Record of Bogwangjeong” in Dongangeosajip (Anthology of Poetry and Prose by Yi Seung-hyu). An excavation of the site by Kwandong University Museum in 1998 revealed temple building sites, traces of a pond, and celadon kiln site.
