Description
Oido used to be a long island some 4km away from the city of Siheung in Gyeonggi-do; when the tidal flats began to be used as salt fields in 1932, however, it started to become part of the mainland -- a process that was completed when the Sihwa Industrial Complex was built there in the late 1980s. It is connected with nearby islands Jebudo and Daebudo and to Sorae Port. The Oido relics are mostly found at the foot of low hills around the highest peak on the island but are believed to be distributed across the entire island. There are many traces of shell mounds near the military unit and a beacon mound linking to Incheon at the top of the peak where the military unit is located. A place for human habitation from the Neolithic Age till the Unified Silla Period, it has dwelling sites, remains of ondol under-floor heating systems, fragments of earthenware, stoneware, and net sinkers; thus serving as valuable material for the study of the lives and culture of the people living along the west coast. The Oido site is Korea’s major historic site along the west coast and the place where the first confirmed Unified Silla dwelling site was found. Therefore, it has great academic value in understanding the process of development in housing and ondol systems.
