Description

This site is the place where peasants who rose up under the banner of the Donghak Peasant Revolution fought their last battle against local government troops. The site was strategically placed between Gangjin-hyeon (now Gangjin-eup, Gangjin-gun), the office of the local military commander (now Byeongyeong-myeon, Gangjin-gun), Byeoksayeok (now an area close to Wondo-ri, Jangheung-eup), the office of the Jangheung Administrator (now an area close to the South Gate of Jangheungeupseong Walled Town), and Jauljae Pass (now the pass between Jangheung-eup and Yongsan-myeon). Peasants continued to fight in this area even after their leaders, including Jeon Bong-jun, had been caught by the local government troops. It is an intriguing historical site for those interested in learning how the rebels conducted their nationalist and democratic movement, chanting slogans against foreign imperialist powers and feudalism. This site, along with others at the Hwangtohyeon Battlefield, Jeongeup (Historic Site No. 295), Ugeumchi Battlefield, Gongju (Historic Site No. 387), and Hwangnyong Battlefield, Jangseong (Historic Site No. 406), are regarded as the top four battle sites of the war waged by the Donghak peasants.
