Description

The Chinese junipers grow throughout the middle-southern regions of Korea to Ulleungdo Island and Japan. This tree, called "Sangnamu" in Korea, is used for burning incense because of its strong fragrance, and is planted in gardens and parks. The Chinese juniper is the representative tree of Ulleungdo Island and the tree grows in the cracks of the steep rockwalls behind the village in Namyang-ri, Ulleungdo Island. Nowadays, it is difficult to find the Chinese juniper in the island because of lumbering activities. Therefore, to prevent damage caused by visitors, the natural habitat of the Chinese junipers in Tonggumi is designated and conserved as a Natural Monument.
