Description
Lacebark pine is called "white pine" or "white bone pine" because the bark of this tree becomes white. This tree was introduced from China by missionaries during the Joseon dynasty. The Lacebark Pine of Yonggung-ri, Yesan is about 200 years old, with height of 14.5m and girth of around 4.77m. The trunk of Lacebark Pine is divided into three forks; two of the three branches are dead, and the other branch is the only part alive. The bark of this tree is tough and white and there are small Lacebark pines growing around the tree. According to legend, in the 9th year of King Sunjo (1809), Kim Jeong-hui planted this tree beside the grave of his great-great-grandfather. Likewise, Kim Jeong-hui's house in Seoul also has a Lacebark Pine given to him by King Yeongjo. Therefore, this Lacebark pine is considered an emblem of Kim's family. The Lacebark Pine in Yesan is a rare tree and has been protected by our descendants for a long time. As the tree is biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
