Description

Horned Hollies belong to Machi Tree and grow in the southern region of Korea. They are called as Horangideunggeukginamu (tree used for scratching the back of a tiger) or Myoajanamu because the tip of the leaf is like a thorn and is suitable for scratching the back of a tiger. The Population of Horned Hollies in Docheong-ri, Buan is scattered around the mountain on the southern coast and is made up of about 50 trees, measuring 2 ~ 3 meters high. Legend has it that, on February 1 by the lunar calendar, villagers broke Horned Hollies and hung them along with fish in front of the door to ward off evil spirits. Since the Population of Horned Hollies in Docheong-ri, Buan is very important for academic research and is the northernmost habitat where Horned Holly can grow wild, it is protected and designated as a natural monument.
