Description

Torreya is distributed in Japan and Korea. It grows at the southern area of the Naejangsan Mountain in Korea and it has a beautiful outlook. The seed of this tree is used as a medical treatment and the oil. At Baegyangsa Temple, there are 5000 Torreya trees, measuring 8 ~ 10m in height. It is presumed that Gakjinguksa, a State Preceptor of Buddhism, planted this tree around the Baegyangsa Temple to cure the villagers with its seeds during the reign of King Gojong of Goryeo Dynasty. Some monks had shared seeds of these trees with the people until the 1970s. Since the Forest of Nut-bearing torreya is biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
