Description

The Sangnim Forest, Hamyang was afforested by the Confucian scholar, Choe Chi-won to prevent flood around the river Wicheon during the reign of Queen Jinseong of Silla Dynasty. It was called Daegwallim, meaning a big forest at first but later as the certain part of the forest was damaged by flood, only Sangnim has been preserved well. The forest has many trees such as Oriental White Oak and Yeddo Hornbeam. The research conducted in 1993 shows that there are 116 kinds of plants while 20,000 trees now grow together. Since the Sangnim Forest is the oldest among the forests afforested by people in Korea, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
