Description
Crape Myrtle belongs to the Lythraceae (loosestrife) family and it is introduced from China. Its flower blooms between July and September with red or white flowers. The crape myrtle is also called Baegilhong, meaning 100-day flowering tree because it blooms for a long time. Two crape myrtles grow at Hwaji Park in Busanjin-gu. These trees are about 800 years old, with the tallest one about 8.3 meters high. The crape myrtles of Yangjeong-dong are said to have been planted in front of the tomb of Jeong Mun-do, the founder of Dongnae Jeong Clan about 800 years ago, the middle period of Goryeo Dynasty. Since the Crape Myrtle of Yangjeong-dong is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by our ancestors, this tree has been designated and conserved as a Natural Monument.
