Description

The red-throated loon, a winter bird, has 5 species. This bird is distributed in British Columbia, Alaska, Kuril, Amur, Sakhalin, Scandinavia, and Korea. The red-throated loon, the pacific loon, and the arctic loon are found on Geojedo Island on the coast of the south sea. In particular, the red-throated loon lives in the shallow lakes of large fields near the North Pole. Sometimes, this bird lives in ponds, mountains, lakes, swamps, or seashores and forests near the sea. Its habitat on the coast of Geojedo Island is a unique large site in Korea. The red-throated loon is distributed along the coast and is sometimes found on the south coast. The pacific loon and the arctic loon are rare, but 1,000-2,000 birds flock regularly on the coast of Geojedo Island in winter. The number of red-throated loon has been decreasing. Thus, the sanctuary of red-throated loons on Geoje Coast is designated as a Natural Monument.
