Description

A black wood pigeon is a kind of pigeon that is normally distributed in the Honshu region of Japan. In Korea, this bird is distributed in Ulleungdo Island, Jeju-do and some areas of the south coast. Generally, this bird inhabits a camellia and lives on a machilus thunbergii forest in Korea. For such reason, the distribution of the Machilus thunbergii and the black wood pigeon are closely related, and the preservation of Machilus thunbergii is directly connected with the protection of the black wood pigeon. A Japanese scholar reported a female black wood pigeon in the academic world. As a result, it was known for the first time that this bird lived on Ulleungdo Island. After that, the report on the habitat environment of the black wood pigeon stated that the black wood pigeon lived in a silver magnolia on the seaside to eat the fruits of the silver magnolia between late July and late August. The growing site of silver magnolia, which is naturally growing on the coast of Sadong, Nam-myeon, Ulleungdo Island, is the representative place of the black wood pigeon's migration. Therefore, this region is designated and protected as a Natural Monument to protect the black wood pigeon.
